The year was 1937.Hell's Kitchen NY. For those of you who don't know NY, it’s the area around 11th Ave. and the docks. A tough time to be young. Alice was the oldest girl of 6 children. Her mother was a housewife, who ruled with an iron fist. Her father work as a cop in New York and an alcoholic.
In the family were Charlie, her older brother, Ruth, Francis, Pat, and John the baby. Everyday after school Charlie would go to work and Alice would help with the younger children. Her father would come home from work every night drunk and mean. She took many beatings on her Mothers behalf. Most of the time it was because Alice was feisty. If she had something to say she said it. And she never knew when to shut her mouth. On the few occasions her father was sober, he loved his children as only a repentant man can.
By the age of 14, Alice had to drop out of school to help support her family. She worked as a waitress, often lying about her age to get jobs. She was a beauty by then. Of medium height, with glossy dark brown hair, the deepest blue eyes, a killer smile and an well-endowed figure. Often her bosses would try and get her into a back room for some overtime. But Alice was much smarter than they, and always managed to leave with her virtue intact, and a raise!
It was about this time that she first noticed boys, or men to be exact. She and her two oldest sisters would often go to the docks to meet the ships coming in. The family was poor and a hot meal was always welcome. The girls would greet the sailors coming ashore and get them to take them on dates. Dinner and a movie were the standard fare. If they were lucky they could get the date to meet the family and take them on other dates while they were in port. Often was the time when you could see the girl's wave heartfelt good byes to one ship, only to see then run down the pier to meet the next ship.
It was here that she met Barry. From the first she knew this was the man she was going to marry. Barry's ship, the Queen Mary, was a frequent guest of NY. Alice was sitting on a bench on the pier and when Barry passed she said "Hi Sailor". They struck up a conversation and a date was made. To Barry, Alice was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. After dinner he insisted on meeting her family. It seemed that Barry left home when he was ten and was a Merchant Marine. His family didn't want him, so he was alone in the world. Barry was only 15 and a Welshman. Alice's parents were horrified to hear this and decided to add him to their family.
Barry was in port for several days. He and Alice were inseparable. On the day he left he told her he would be back. Come back he did. Time and time again. They grew closer, and fell more in love each day. Alice still worked as a waitress, and Barry would meet her after work. They would go out with friends to dinner or the movies.
But then the war came. Barry enlisted. He asked Alice to marry him before he left. She said no. She didn't want him for only a short time. She wanted him for life. She told him she would marry him when he came home from the war. She knew he would come home. They kept in touch through letters and visits home. Although short they both made the best of it. Just 2 days before the end of the war Barry was shot. He was sent to Utica to recover from his injuries. Alice patiently awaited his arrival home. Barry's wound was to his arm, and forced him to be in a body cast for several months. Alice loved him still.
Plans were made for a chapel wedding, a small family affair at the local church. As most brides are, Alice was excited. While she was getting ready she found a letter from a girl in Australia to Barry. Hurt at first then angry, she left Barry standing at the altar unawares. When he came home she told him what she found. He explained that was from before they met. It took sometime but they were back together and planning another wedding. On the day of the wedding Alice once again found a letter from a girl to Barry. Again she left him standing alone. Barry, having remembered the first time, went directly home to find out what she found this time. Once again it was easily explained. This letter was from a cousin in England.
They again made plans. This time Barry waited for Alice to get ready and they went to the church together. On June 26,1945 they were finally married. Since both had to be at work the next day they only had one night for their honeymoon. On that night they promised never to keep secrets from each other and never to go to bed angry. It's a promise they both kept.
Through the years they grew closer and closer. A miscarriage, and the birth of two daughters. The years rolled by as they do. Through sickness and health they built a legacy for their children. Strict but generous parents they raised their children. Working side by side in their marriage. Barry always helping in the house when he was home, and Alice working outside the house when money was needed.
Of arguments there were a few, but easily settled. Their friends and family were envious of their relationship and their family. But they were always together. Their children would always remember the love of their parents for them and for each other. Lessons learned by watching and seeing how a marriage is supposed to be. Two people working together, for each other and their family.
On April 20 1999, Alice died suddenly. This ended one of the greatest love stories ever written. No, they were not famous, but they had what we all spend a lifetime looking for. They were soulmates, a companions, a lovers and friends. Barry goes on, but he's missing half his heart. At the end as in the beginning, he was there holding her hand and telling her how beautiful she was. Loving every wrinkle on her face, see her, as she had been when they first met.

For you Mom.

And you say that your writing isn't very good. An attack of false humility maybe?
