Where no tyranny is tolerable

The U.S.S. Enterprise is traveling through a mostly unexplored and uncharted region of the galaxy, that is, the backwaters of the western-most extremity of the Eastern Spiral Arm of the Milky Way to be a little more precise.  It is a peculiar zone of Space in which everything that seems to be is actually not, and everything that doesn't seem to be actually is.  In this zone of the Cosmos, more than just a towel, one must carry a door with one's self at all times.  One never knows when one might need a doof, for example, if one wishes to gain entry to a locked planet after closing time.
The mission of the Enterprise: to learn the fate of a party of settlers sent to populate a certain Planet Kniftar (Which is ratfink spelled backwards) thought to be suitable for both human and vulcan life.  As the Enterprise approaches Planet Kniftar, it is struck by a powerful radiation wave that almost disables the vessel's guidance system, but the crew are nevertheless able to successfully beam down to the surface.  There are no traces of the settlements planned for this world, and Mr. spock's instruments reveal no signs of life.  But although there don't seem to be, actually, there are.
(gotta lie down again. To be continued).

Space is big.
