Night really isn't so bad. I remember when I was a young man; nighttime was my favorite time. I came alive at dusk… drinking, dancing, partying all night, coming home at dawn to shower and zombie my way through the day. Then do it all over again the next night.

I'm older now, mature, married, a father, and night has a whole new attitude. There is darkness to it that I hardly noticed before. A quiet that is almost eerie, but that quiet gives way to the cacophony inside my head now. The bustle of the day fades, and the voices inside screech their anguish unrelentingly. If not for the dark, I fear I would go mad, the darkness you see provides clarity of vision in spite of those howling demons.

Doubt, fear, anger, distrust, and hurt; they join in the chorus of wails. But my eyes sees through their bluster, unhindered by the visions of the daylight world my mind's eye can peer deep into my soul and guide my essence past the doorways of insanity, paranoia, and self destruction.

I see the truth of my existence, the glorious meaning of my being. I see the effervescent gift of love given to me by my gods and this vision calms those shades of sanity's foe. The god of earth has given me strength of will, withstanding torrents and attacks of worldly demons. The god of water has endowed me with fluidity to change, adapt, and encompass all that blocks my way, the gods of air and fire have blessed me with force and fierce determination.

My mind sees these blessings, when the dark of night enshrouds me. It sees them and guides my soul to the place of commune, to enrich, revive, and restore itself. Night really isn't so bad.

Very insightful. I realize that sounds like such a commercial response, but I truly enjoyed reading this, as I do with all of your work.

I view the night as my only time alone, and therefor treasure it as much as I can.

Great piece, I'll be reading more of yours.

The reference to gifts from the gods in this is excellent! I liked the whole thing, it was quiet and soulful, but I was most struck by the reference to the gods! Very good work!

As a little girl, I hid under the covers at night, terrified of the skeletons I believed came alive at night - just to plague me. (Egocentric childhood...!)
Now night is the only time I feel free to just breathe, to step out of my 'day persona'. It's the only time I can cry with any semblence of release and I write most often at night too. I question the world and my purpose in it at night. I wonder about God, about death and the other 6 billion we share this worldwith. A freaky time is night.
Love your words, by the way! They echo some of my thoughts precisely.
