What or who was the deciding factor in each of your lives that got you started in writing poetry?

Was it a person ( Teacher, Love One ect. )
Or maybe it was a special moment in your life that you knew you were just meant to write poetry.
Perhaps it just came out of the blue.

Share your story with us.

I guess I will be the first one, since I started this thread.

My urge for writing poetry came as quite a suprise to me. I was working nights back in the late 80's or early 90's While sitting in front of the computer it was like I got struck by lightning and started writing a poem for my wife to be given to her as a Christmas present. Now I had never written any sort of poetry before in my life, in fact I hated English classes while I was in high school.

This poem was very simple, in fact each stanza consisted of 2 lines that rhymed.
Sort of 3rd grade ish.

Since those eary days I have tried to learn different ways of writting poetry and if I had to pick a favorite story line I would say it would be from DARK to trying to tell a story within my poems and trying to express what others feel...Paul

Good question, Paul..

I was teaching tenth grade English in the late nineties, and found myself to be quite irritated at the poor quality of the poetry included in the literature texts.  Along with a few of the all time greats, I found a vast array of work that I couldn't stand to read.

I told myself that I could do better, and that was the beginning.  Shortly thereafter, I searched online for a place to share my work and joined a site called "The Scroll."  It was there that I met Ron, who had just begun Passions in Poetry.  Within a few short months the site was expanded to include the forums, and the rest is history..

Nan...Thanks for your story. It seems like you fell in love with poetry at a very early age.I might have liked English better if I would have had a different teacher. Mine liked to play chekers & flirt with the girls. He actually married one of his 12th grade students...Paul

Between the Lines

Hi Paul. I think I have  written this before, but my brother had put me online to receive a birthday card after my father's death and I started to write emails to myself about my feelings. I eventually discovered how to use the internet and went to a site that our Marge just happened to be on {I didn't know her or anyone on line yet}.
On that site a poet was posting about a nursing home and all the individuals involved with it and it impressed me to tears.
I decided to take my letters to myself that were sort of a daily journal and began to  write them as poems...found another site that many before pip had been on also and continued to learn and develop my own style of writing. Eventually someone on pip read me elsewhere and invited me here and that is where I have stayed although not posting too much lately as  life has kept me  busy in other ways at the moment. I use to write at least a poem a day and sometimes more the first few years back then when my emotions were in turmoil. "Things" are calmer now or maybe it's just that  I have accepted them.

But I do read  almost every day and hope the site  is here forever.

Maureen

Maureen...Thanks for taking time to share with us your story. I like you do more reading than writting these days. I don't know if it's because I am at ease with the way my life is now compared to when things weren't working out very well for me.
I always enjoy reading you Maureen, you might not write as much now, but I know that flame still burns in your heart maybe just not as bright these days. Thanks again...Paul

For me it was a broken heart... the first of many... and many years ago, as a teenager. I've never claimed to be able to write well, but for me it's a catharsis and always has been. When I feel something deeply, I need to get it out... and pen and paper are better than a fist through the wall (cause I"m rather delicate you see, and don't like pain!). I sometimes go years without writing, but I always miss having that outlet for my feelings when I do

Tracey...I think alot of poets are just like you, they write because of a broken heart. When your heart aches you have to find a way to let it out or you feel like it will explode and you will never love again.
On the other hand some people write because of love in their lives that they just want to shout it from the mountain tops.
Thanks so much for telling us your story...Paul
