. I’ve just finished yet another batch of books on Haiku and I’m beginning to wonder: is it Haiku of the translator’s improvements that attract me most. The truth is most of what claims to be faithful translations strike me as reflecting rather insipid comments with line breaks. Robert Hass’s: The Essential Haiku, Versions of Basho, Buson, & Issa, ISBN 0-88001-351-6 is the best I’ve read, and yet in a book of his ”poems” I found a vertical string of his “translations” from “The Essential Haiku” presented as his own work. Maybe the magic and mystery of Haiku is in the translator’s and not author’s pen. |
