What if the first like, 4 lines of the poem are lyrics from a song, but the rest arent, is this plagiarism or not?

Fair Use is determined, in large part, by relative length. Put another way, if your hypothetical poem happened to only BE four lines long, then yea, four lines from a song would definitely be plagiarism. If the poem was six lines long? Probably still plagiarism. Six thousand lines? Maybe not.

If the first four chapters of your novel were written by Stephen King, would you get in trouble? Probably. In fact, even the first four paragraphs would probably be too much. But the first four words? Maybe not.

In other words, it's all relative.

My gut tells me that four lines of a song is probably a bit too much in most average-length poems, especially if the four lines are contingent. But, again, that's just a gut feeling.

I was curious because i hate to be a snitch or something of the sort, but I saw someone posting a poem and the first 4 lines were some from one of my favorite songs.

But wouldn't a simple citation to accompany the poem solve the problem?

Did you mention it to the one that posted the poem?

i don't think it's more as plagiarism as much as it is wanting a good idea to go along with the persons poem, also maybe the person didn't realize they were using part of the song until the person read it over and really liked the outcome so kept it anyway... it doesn't really matter if it is or isn't though it is what you think...
