After reading many sonnets by Shakespeare and Milton and then reading sonnets in the poetry forums by Liz Santos, Irish Rose and Nan, I really want to try to write one myself.

Note that word 'try,'   I'm a little apprehensive because Liz, Kathleen and Nan do it so beautifully and perfectly, I may put that form of poetry to shame...

But, if anyone is willingly to briefly teach me I am willing to give it a try.

I already understand the basics, but am confused about the different forms...I hear that there's the English Sonnet and the Italian and/or Petrarchan Sonnet?
Both forms seem to be so different from each other, some rhyme, some don't, and I would like to know which is easier to start with and which is the most popular form.  I'd assume it's the English sonnet?  I have also read a few sonnets by Petrarch and didn't care for his style as much as I do Shakespeare's style(English Sonnet)

I am aware that there are 10 syllables in every line.

4 lines
rhyme A
rhyme B
rhymes with A
rhymes with B

4 lines, same idea

4 lines, same idea

2 lines, couplet
both lines rhyme with each other

is this correct?

Of course, I know that I have to center around an idea or message and develop my sonnet from there.

I think I've also answered a few of my questions on my own

But, I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer...hint, hint...Nan or Liz!?
