Hi,
I am wanting to know if this site is lagit or not!! A Sarah Box sent me an e-mail in reguards to a contest for poetry, she says there are no fee's and an award for the winners, is this something to do or not do?? I have no idea about these things and so if someone has some advice I would be very grateful.

wow, I can't believe other people have had the same problem as I had. Only I didn't have people to warn me about the place and my mother was so proud to have something of mine 'published' she bought the book

So this means that I can't claim that book as being published right?

This whole thing makes me very mad.
Everyone search the name "Riverwood" at Poetry.com and you'll see I also have a few poems there myself, and sure enough every single one of them was selected as a finalist.  I asked my friend Darrell (who is not a poet, and can't write to save his life) to write a senryu.  It was actually pretty funny.....

a vampire bat
sucks the life out of a dog
the dog is now dead

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a finalist.
I was very excited to think that I was published, the first time around, and then I put two and two together.  The Darrell test put my fears to rest... when he got his letter.
I often think it'd be worth the $100 or whatever just to see what kind of crap they "publish" in these books.
I think it's an outrage that these people would take advantage of a group of people such as ourselves... in a way, I think legal action should be taken somehow.  It's just not right....

Concieted??  Impossible!  That would be a fault!

Oh yeah... on that note, couldn't legal action be taken about how they say they "carefully read and review each one?"  If one could somehow disprove this?
Dunno, but I guess I am a dreamer.    It comes with youth, forgive me.

Well i think your little test with your friend should be proof enough...i think someone SHOULD do something...like you Allan, i was so happy with the first letter i got...i now have about 3 or 4 'winning' poems...if you look under Masales on there, those are mine...
isnt it fraud though???

Sami,

Actually they word it really tricky, but in so many "words" tell you that you won't make it if you don't pay.

Don't feel bad, I also have a book from them.

Anyone can make it into their book as long as they're willing to fork over the cash.
Deceptive? You bet it is!

They covered this on 20/20 once. Tested with a classroom full of kindergartners, and they all got the same letter back.

It's sad, but they haven't been stopped, so just stay away from them, and of course, spread the word.

I am happy to say I gave them nothing of mine, I do have a friend who is happy with her work being published by them and thats OK, I just want to know that I really wrote something worth being published, I work on on my poetry and hope that all people who read and reply to it are being sincere, I guess I want people to treat me like I treat them in everything, but I also know that out in the world it's not always that way and its sad,

Cerenity- stay away from them - I even just found aout 20/20 or Dateline (I think 20/20 with Stossel or Stone Philips) did an expose on these people - all they really want is to sell books - these books will have you poems in them - yes- but they are no guide as to whether you can write... They are online too in several guises - if you see Owings Mills as an address for them stay away - it is this site about which you are asking.

Oh!!!! I feel like a fool. They got me too. Grrrrrrrrr...... I couldn't read your reply to this Ron...it says it's forbidden...but judging from the others, I've been played!
Someone say "class action suit?"

Not only did I get the finalist letter, but I also received a followup letter saying that I was one of 33 poets chosen to also appear on a CD where they read my poem as well.  I haven't bought either from them, but as everyone else, I was deceived into thinking my poetry was something special and worthy of publishing.

With my strength I shall endure,
With my poetry I shall have legacy.

Same here, and I already ordered a book before I found out, so I wrote them a letter with my withdrawl, saying that I did forbid them to publish my poem. They hadn't cashed in my money yet and I got a 'refundnote' from them.

All that happened before I found Passions.

Here's the latest and greatest about these people.  I was just sent another letter by them saying that I made it into "The Best Poems and Poets of 2002" with my "Power of the Rain" poem.  Anybody else gotten 3 different letters from them about publishing their works?  I got the first finalist compilation letter, the CD letter, and now the "Best of..." letter.  What do you think?

With my mind I shall explore,
With my strength I shall endure,
With my poetry I shall have legacy.
