How long have all you poets out there been writing poetry?

Me, I started Friday, November 13th, 1998 (hmmm, on Friday the 13th! I wonder if that means something) when the words to Forever Gone but Forever in our Hearts just seemed to write themselves, and I've been doing so ever since--except for when my muse goes on hiatus.

So what about you guys?

Elizabeth

I remember sitting in front of the fire, writing. My pet dinosaur breathing down my neck as I chipped out my first poem on the wall of my cave..

I started writing poetry in 1954.  I was, and am a big fan of Poe in particular.  I got started after reading "The Raven" and wondered if I could even do it.  Most all of my work has to do with unrequited love,  the writing of which was a salve for the pain I felt.

Hey, PoetdeVine...I was that dinosaur!

Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.

Hmmm....fall of 89, my first semester in college.  Just started writing one day.  Now, I only stop when I'm blocked, or when my errant Muse is off on vacation, or when she forgot to pay her union dues, or the time she eloped, then there was the time she had 'auto-trouble' (didn't know she drove...), and then one of her relatives died...again...think that same one died like 8 or 9 times..right around Spring Break, now that I think about it.  Hmmmm.....

I started when I was 15...the usual teenage angst stuff...no actually, that's untrue. I was however incredibly depressed and my poems were bleak and dark and sometimes horrific. Fortunate how I have progressed in the last 9 years! LOL.

I just started about 5 months ago.  Hence the immaturity of my writing.  I always read everyone's work here in Passions and I can't believe that I actaullly get posts!!!!  Compared to so many incredible poets in here, I was afraid to even submit anything for the book.  I joined Passions immediately after writing my first poem.  I am so glad I came here!!!  Everyone is very encouraging and I have made some terrific friends here too.

I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone for making me feel so comfortable here and supporting my writing.

I wrote my first poem on Father's Day, 1998. My Dad had just recently passed away and I couldn't sleep the night before Father's Day and I just started writing and have been ever since. The first piece of writing that I ever did was a 'letter' to my Dad for his funeral service. I guess writing was a way of dealing with the grief. Now I seem to have a compulsion to write. Strange how some things happen. I'll never figure out why I never even thought of writing for the majority of my life (there were plenty of losses and heartache in the past, too) and now it is my passion. Go figure!

Hi My name is Cerenity,

Had to do that just sounded like the way to start. he-he

Any way I wrote my first poem  (here goes) in 1981 I guess that was not so hard, any way again were was I oh ya 1981, it was called Splended Love it was not so good but it was about my new baby boy and I have it still. Then I did not pick up a pen again until 1994, man the years fly by. Always wanted to share my dreams, thoughts, my love for people and last nov.99 someone gave me this computer and (mind you I could barely turn it on) and in Feb of this year I posted my first poem (Mapping of the soul) and I also on that day in Feb. started living really living, and it has been a fight ever sence around here but thanks to some awesome friends at passions, I KEEP fighting to do what I love. If I can touch just one heart with words filled with Love then my heart rejoices.

Serious answer. I wrote an autobiography when I was 10 (not too terribly exciting) but got an A on it. I decided I was a writer.

The next year (6th grade) I wrote a Christmas play that we performed. In 7th grade, I had a notepad that I wrote a novel in - each day I would bring it to school and my classmates would pass it around to read (it was about twins -one good, one evil).

I wrote a poem about unrequited when I was sixteen(sigh!).

Over the next few years, I wrote some short stories but nothing definitive. I took up my poet's pen in 1988 when I got divorced. From then on, I wrote only a few a year.

(are you bored yet?)

Prose was my first love but I found poetry was an easy way to express my feelings. After I found Passions (actually Ron found me!) I began to write more and more. Without all of you to inspire me with YOUR excellent poetry, I don't know where I would be. Thank you.

Hi everyone!

I think I wrote my first poem when I was around 8 or 9. Really don't remember what age, but it was somewhere around there. It was actually a song, but that's another story...lol

I didn't write anything again until I was 14 and in what I thought was 'love'. then I wrote for about 3 years off and on. After that I didn't write anything until I found passion's.

Anyway, the real reason I wanted to reply to this was to thank all of you for giving me the confidence to write again. For a while I thought I'd never write again, but you guys are so sweet and honest and caring and loving and well, I could go on and on

So, thank you for giving so much of yourselves to all of us here.

I think I started around '94. My girlfriend had sent a poem, (a spiritual one), on reincarnation. Or to dispute the fact of it anyhow.  Asked me to read it over and tell her what I thought.

Well, I ended up rewriting the entire thing. I helped fix hers (with truths) and wrote one of my own. She got me started, and I've been writing spiritual ones ever since

My mom told me I recited quite a nice little peice about the leaves falling in the Fall when I was 3.   But I didn't start writing poetry until I was in 5th grade. That would be 5 years ago I believe.

I wrote my first poem in the 2nd grade. . . it was about the Sun, and was chosen to represent my school in a city-wide competition. . . I didn't get a prize, but was made honorable mention. . . and I got to get out of school for the day!!  LOL

When I was in 8th-9th grade, I wrote some plays, using my classmates as inspiration and some of their stories in them. . . they're not very good, but when you're in 9th grade, and you tell someone that you used them in a play that you wrote, they'll love it!!

I really didn't start to write poetry until I was about 16 or so. . . just picked up a pen one day and started writing. . . the words just seemed to come very easily. . . and thus began my affair with poetry. . .

I have always written about love. . . I don't know why that is. . . I just can't seem to write about anything else. . . oh sure, I've written some funny and some interesting things here at Passions. . . but the main focus of my work has always been love. . . beginning, middle, and end. . . passionate, gentle, erotic. . . and everything in between. . . just what I do best I guess. . .

Okay, now this is getting long. . . so I should stop!!  LOL     Thanks for your time, and it was fun to read how all of you got started as well!!

Cool! All of you guys! I'm glad you started writing poetry, 'cause if you didn't I wouldn't be able to read any of yours.   By the way, I enjoyed the dinosaur comments.
