Is there anything that Passions will do to prevent plagiarism- as in someone posting something they did not write? Do you allow that person to continue to post? |

Marie, I appreciate your question. When one person accuses another of posting something that is plagiarized, they must certainly be prepared to prove that the work is their own. Saying it is so, or producing a web-page with their name on the poem isn't necessarily sufficient. Dated evidence of publication or copyright is the only acceptable determinant. Until such evidence is produced by one of the people in question, we at Passions cannot presume either party to be the dishonest one. The poem, of course, could not remain on the forum until such time that the issue is resolved. [This message has been edited by Nan (edited 03-22-2000).] |

I understand that presenting a webpage with the poem insn't necessarily sufficient proof, but then I question why this person would claim plagiarism? I believe we both know of the incident that happened this week... I won't name names. The woman who claims her poem was plagiarised did not discover it. Someone going by the pen name Secret Squirrel did, and alerted her. I sent messages to both women, and only got a reply from the lady who claims plagiarism. The other lady offered nothing... no explanation, or apology. I don't know about you, but this incident has me fuming mad. What is to stop someone from coming along and using one of my poems posted on Passions? Could I claim plagiarism? I would hope so... |

We have been in contact with both of the ladies involved in this issue, and we hope that they can resolve this question between them. The poem belongs to its rightful author. Marie, if someone were to use your poem as their own, you certainly should claim your ownership of it. Your first dated (from the webmaster's records) posting of the work would back up your premise.
