Goodnight, you
(shine above)
goodnight, me
(in heaven, below—
      “with you”
I whisper)
Goodnight to love
(But just for the night, my dear)
Goodnight to life
(No, not forever, little one)
Goodnight everything everywhere
Even though you can’t hear me
I am here
In some far off reaching back sort of way
I will know you
If you would only
[hush]
say goodnight to me

12/5/00
Peace,

I think this is more than just a goodnight. I see two very different scenarios. First, and I hope this is the right interpretation, the speaker (possibly a child) might be thinking of a goodnight bid by a lost friend or relative. The second, darker interpretation sees this a a sort of suicide note.

In either case, the use of parentheses seems a bit overdone.
