balance
is difficult to find,
and once gained,
can be tenuous.

seems easy for some,
though they may never
have lost balance,
fallen,

scraped the forehead,
been in pain,
then known the fear
of losing balance again,
once finally regained.

takes time, patience,
just the right foundation.

yet those who have slipped,
tripped, fallen
flat on their faces
know there is always

that slight chance
balance could be
pulled from beneath them,
no matter
how steady they stand,

and they would,
once again,
fall
from that solid stance,

and what might break
this time?

Hi Kris:

The strength of this piece, I think, is the self-consciousness of the speaker concerning something most people don't give a second thought and, as a result, take for granted.  Such a person would tend to analyze the states of "balance" and "imbalance" moreso than many would and, I think, run the risk of being paralized by a fear of falling.

Nice work, Kris.  I do think you could do more to emphasize the "blissful ignorance" of the "balanced" masses.  Even as it is written, you've given me much to think about.  Thanks for the read.

Jim,

It's so nice to see your words in a reply! Hope the real world isn't giving you a hard time...just keeping you a little too busy?

I didn't care for this piece "poetically" very much, but it does carry a message. There are so many things people take for granted; things that they should be thankful for, and be understanding of those who may not have all they do...after all, at any time, it could be them.

I know that because of circumstances in your life, you are more compassionate than most, and I thank you for the kind words. I was truly hoping someone would understand the message. And the Teach gets an A+!!

Kris

I agree that the content carries the poem (this is not necessarily a bad thing).  I've been told that sometimes the art should be hidden.  What I liked about this poem was pointed look into something as complex and vulnerable as the human emotional state.  So even if it is "poetically" uncomplicated, it succeeds in addressing and communicating a very complicated subject.  The whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts, so to speak.

As far as real life is concerned ... both busy and happy (a good combo for me).  Because I AM a real estate developer, my compassion MUST be selective (e.g. "That rain forest looks like a good place for a hotel"), but I appreciate the compliment anyway.

I suppose that's as compassionate as the city planners who want to develop the land behind my house...adding three-story apartment buildings to an already over-crowdwd subdivision. We beat em, though, with some good advice.

Now they only want to put up thirteen houses on less than three acres.

What happened to GREEN-SPACE?????

Oh, one point...it's not really a self-consciousness as an internalized anxiety one learns to live with, and that fades with time spent in "balance"...just like if ya took a really bad spill skiing...it might take time until your skiing like you were before due to the "fear of falling". I'm not saying I'm a great skier, but they say the more skilled you are, the tougher it is to overcome the anxiety.

Glad to hear you're doing well...keep in touch,
