I fought with the child for so many years,
as his friend and his saviour,
together we faced our darkest fears,

and I sobbed,
and I cried,
with the news that he died,
and what he had said with his final words...

"So many nights,
I have fought this valiant fight,
and through all of my days
I've known anger and pain,
and have done all I could to make it right.

Still now I lie here forgotten,
terrifed,
bleeding and broken,
wondering what started this terrible war.

Has my life been in vain,
with all this anger and pain,
or was there something more?

Can somebody please tell me...
                    What are we fighting for?

I thought of the child through all of the night,
of our wars and our battles,
and through all of our most valiant fights,

and I laughed,
and I sighed,
as I remembered the time,
he told me the story of his life.

"So many nights,
I sat wondering about life,
and thourgh so many days,
I've seen so many things,
and yet the entire time I was blind.

Now I know pain and agony,
broken homes,
murder and savagery,
killing for the ideals we chose to ignore.

Why can't they believe,
in the stories I've seen,
while fighting this terrible war?

Do any of them know...
                    What we are fighting for?

I thought of the child for the rest of my days,
as a friend and a leader,
it was my duty to speak his ideas,

and I stood,
and I spoke,
of the truths I have known,
and of a youth's innocence taken away.

So many nights,
he fight that valiant fight,
and not once did he know,
why he would go,
and take so many innocent lives.

And he doubted his own sanity,
compassion,
mercy and humanity,
whether he was fighting for ideals or something more.

For now I now pain,
as my own child has been slain,
for ideals I once held in my own heart.

And will I ever know...
                    What were we fighting for?
