Carousing through the skyscraper jungle
or is this another cardboard scene
from a Los Angeles TV set?
So much of life is lived in Manhattan
coffee shops, or is that another
movie moment stolen from the racier
version of a New York novel?
And the night life --
lust and love included
in another wishful wet dream.
They say you can have anything delivered
in New York, including those famous 'Italian' pizzas.
Order in, or out -- celebrate breakfast, or brunch,
or every repast, at the crowded corner restaurant.
What does a Manhattan cookbook look like?
Taste Like?  Has anyone ever tasted one?
Follow famous avenues overwhelmed
by taxi cabs and personal unparkables
to the next rumor in a radio
landscape.  Ride the model
subway to the next scene
in a New York novel,
TV show, or movie set,
or simply save your token
for the next time you happen
to be at home going nowhere.

Marq,
I enjoyed this one. I'm from Los Angeles and the first time I was in New York I had a very similar sensation. Just about every place I went, I saw a scene from another movie -- Oh, that's where there got that idea. Also, I had a really great time there and the infamous rudeness was simply not present.

Thanks,
Brad

I like your description of New-York. The poem beautifully portrays the "artificial" life-style. It, to me, poses this question -- have New-Yorkers become second rated actors and actresses, and has New-York become a theatre where already acted life is being acted?

Well done Marq!

hey marq!  i thought this really picked up at "And the night life"  i think maybe if you shorten your exposition, maybe combine the 2 questions as 1, it would tighten it up and make it flow faster.  you've created a nice tableau of what i hope to see at some point next year, (when i go up north for college) maybe, some weekend.  nice job

Gotta go with the masses on this one Marq. Excellent poem and though I've never been to NYC, I still thought the words conveyed the intentions very well. I really thought the cookbook part was very witty, and:

"to the next rumor in a radio
landscape.  Ride the model
subway to the next scene
in a New York novel,
TV show, or movie set,
or simply save your token
for the next time you happen
to be at home going nowhere."

was a fantastic set of lines building up to a great ending.

"or every repast, at the crowded corner restaurant"

Thought you could have lost the comma on this line.

"What does a Manhattan cookbook look like?"

Like I said I thought the cookbook line was witty but I think it would work even better without the line that followed..."Taste Like?  Has anyone ever tasted one?"

Anyways, very good poem, thanks and take care,
Trevor
