Robin Laffan
6/11/99

A scream pierces the suburban night
Against the distant background hum
Of the city’s sleep
It echoes from an unseen room
Or alleyway
You hold your breath to listen for more
As already the memory fades.
Was it a scream or a cry
Of laughter on a shared game
Or was there a cry at all?
And as you release the breath
That has been straining in your lungs
You hear it again
On the edge of sight
At the far side of here
And still you cannot tell.
A pause with the hushed swoop of a passing car
Revving through the night to an unknown house
Perhaps returning
Perhaps going
And in its wake the voices start.
Half heard, half shouted
A baying of laughter or a sob of fear
At the edge of the night
Who can tell?
A slamming door, a child’s voice.

The city lives on tonight.

Personally, I like this very much, i wouldn't change anything, that's my opinion.

Thinking is just what a great many people think they are doing when they are merely rearranging their predjudices.

Robin this is excellent! I don't see anything with this that needs changing at all! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this!
