The cars were barely moving-
As far as the eye could see-
Exquisitely frustrated,
But it was not only me.

Thousands, maybe tens of-
Were fleeing from the storm-
On the gulf coast of south Texas-
This can sometime be the norm.

It is the twenty-third of August
The year two thousand five-
By the time the surge is over
Eighteen hundred won' survive.

Music cancelled out by news
I can’t even hear a song…
I’d make better time out walking,
I’ve been in this line too long.

Believe many a car were left on the highway that day.  Only music was the angels singing.

Challenge well met John.  Always love to where these lines take other people.

I was in Gulfport, Mississippi at the time. Such chaos, panic, tragedy. The coming together afterwards was amazing though. I didn't dare try to get out of town although my family pleaded with me to do so. You've captured a part of the memory well. Enjoyed.
