What happened to the green of spring-
When autumn leaves turn gold?
What happens to the summer’s heat-
When winter winds blow cold?
What happens to the bloom of youth-
That we can’t seem to hold?
We’re born, we bloom, we wither-
And we find we’re growing old.

Growing old is not as bad-
As many tend to think…
It’s better than an early death-
To war, or drugs, or drink.
At least with age we’ve had the time-
To stop and smell the flowers-
And reminisce of better times-
Sometimes for several hours.

I guess if there’s a moral
To this little verse of mine-
‘Twould be to savor every day-
Like some rare vintage wine.
Live like there’s no tomorrow-
Drink deeply of each day-
And live life to it’s fullest-
Ere they lay you ‘neath the clay.

oh so very true, those vines that bear fruit ripen with age.

Great poem, John.  Should be mandatory reading for students somewhere.  Sadly, this realization only comes with age to most of us.

Very nice poem, made me not regret getting older as much as I do.
