She Knows

There was a time
when the button-down collar
of the double-pocketed
light blue shirt
casually hanging over
the far end of the couch,
rested on slightly-tanned,
milky-white flesh,
and the pockets –
the pockets were rounded,
full, and promising.

And when she would take it off,
for me alone, oh my gosh –
I loved her more and more
every time.

Now that well-washed,
light-blue shirt
seems always to drape
across the slightly worn,
padded arm,
a reminder, she says,
of the 20 pounds I've gained
over the last ten years.

My feet are on the coffee table,
socks, black, no shoes,
my elbow,
on the left,
somewhat more worn,
arm of the couch.
She's leaning against me,
breathing –
How she can't
hear the throbbing of my heart,
I'll never understand.

How she can't feel the heat
of the blood rushing through
my almost bursting veins,
will always remain a mystery,
how she doesn't notice my soul,
trying to meld with hers . . .
and yet, when I fall into her eyes,
and she gets that tiny up-turn
at both ends of her lips,
I know she's aware.

She knows, and
is only teasing me,
as if she was still inside
the button-down collar
of that double-pocketed
light blue shirt,
draped over the arm
at the far end
of the couch.

She knows . . .
She knows,

and that's enough
for me.

Sorry this didn't much work but I was trying to force something I couldn't get my head around.
Decided to post it anyway as it's better than nothing and will clear my head.

Smile . . .

James...There is nothing at all wrong with this tender moment relived with the one you love and still loves you. Don't change a thing my friend. Really enjoyed...Paul

It was awesome! Stayed up late tonight reading and writing poetry here and I am glad I did! I am not new here. Just got a new profile. I can not access my email on my other profile. I never could write poems in prose form although I can write in general and have some older stuff that I also thought did not come out right and turned out it was perfect a few years later looking back at it. I tend to reread my work too much and over critic it. I think this was PERFECT and conjured the image of the button up shirt on the arm of the chair perfectly. I think it ended perfectly as well. Take care and I look forward to reading more of your poems!

Jimmy,
This is a great poem! No, I didn't feel like I'd been gut punched after I read it and that's okay. You still paint love like nobody's business. This was no exception.
