Dreaming  my dreams, and running my race-
Are all that have occupied me.
The years passed so quickly, it’s hard to believe-
But the end of my journey I see.

Why! Just yesterday, I was a young man-
Just a kid who had stars in his eyes.
This morning I shaved a man over sixty-
And somehow it came a surprise.

“Where does time go?” a question oft pondered-
It’s fleeting, I have to reply…
From swaddled in blankets, to stretched in a coffin-
Like the grass in the field we must die.

What is your life? I’ve heard ‘tis a vapor-
You’re here, then tomorrow you’re gone.
It’s better, by far, to live life un-cumbered-
At the end of the road die alone.

No one to miss me, and no one to grieve-
No one to mention my name-
I came to this world unknown and un-lauded-
And I will depart, just the same.

Ah...the questions of life...where does the time go...all of us have limited time on earth and our time to depart is unknown to us...I don't think you realize how many you have touched over the years...your words have brought smile, tears, joy and sadness...that is a special gift and you have blessed many with it including me...keeps words and light flowing from you heart to your pen where many may bask in the vision you paint...think not of departure but of hope for a future yet unknown...you are in my thoughts and prayers my friend...hugs

“From swaddled in blankets, to stretched in a coffin-“

Oh, I love that line gunslinger. Wonderful poem and great way to contemplate all the questions in life I have been visiting these days as well. Very much enjoyed this poem.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Lots of thoughtful sadness here. I try to live it. Contemplating it's end never puts me in a good place.  Enjoyed!

John, at some point I think we all start question the time we have left, and what we have and have not done with our lives.

"It’s better, by far, to live life un-cumbered-
At the end of the road die alone."

I know I have life most my life alone, even when not alone, if that makes any sense at all.  Only someone who is alone by nature could understand that, probably, but I get the feeling in much of your poetry that you would be one who does.  I completely agree with your statement there.
