The Blues and Me

Teenager with a guitar,
‘Was there you found your first love.
Didn’t need to be a star…
Was not what you dreamt of.
‘Was just something in the ache
A twist on the strings gave.
Like that first feel of heartbreak,
Passing over your grave.

There’s a truth etched in music,
Leaves the rest of life void.
Something quite therapeutic—
And thoroughly enjoyed.
Takes a special kind of person
To make that guitar bleed.
Pleasure and pain become one
When all you feel is Need.

Watch as the world disappears
Through the bottom of a glass.
While the haze erases the years,
As you bid life a slow pass.
Till the bluest of blues bleeds black,
While you die to match its tone.
Where there is no coming back,
From where you must go alone.

Where nothing makes it better,
Where nothing ever could.
When life hands you a dead letter—
Tells you it’s for your own good.
You were caught up in the moment,
Till the gods ripped her away.
Now you’ll never find atonement,
So all you can do is play.

If the blues don’t last forever,
That’s okay, the echoes will.
While, soul bound to this endeavor,
You know yours cannot sit still.
The passion pouring through you
When you hit that note just right.
When you close your eyes,
When the world sighs…
When you fade into the light.

Michael...The way you write the blues I can tell it is in your blood. I really felt like I was in a Blues club listening to one of the greats play while reading this.
It might surprise you but I love the blues being from the South and hearing it played all the time when I was young. Blues and soul music of the 50's and 60's makes me come alive. I am very surprised that you are into the blues. I wrote a couple of so called blues songs here on PIP nothing great but okay. I really liked this poem very much, it made my soul come alive...Paul

Thank you, Paul, I *attempted to play guitar as a teen…was never that good at it…had to settle for rhythm, that much I could do.  I fell in love with heavy metal power ballads in the 80’s…that’s where my guitar obsession began.  Found my way into bands like Ten Years After and Pink Floyd when metal died…remarkably, I never listened to blues though and thought guitar was as lost an art as poetry for many years.  All I can say is thank God for YouTube, for that is where I discovered Blues…and literally, it has been a little slice of heaven for me…music that has the power to just wash everything away from me.  No stress, no worry…just utter peace…because I am listening to what I have felt my entire life, but could only express with word.  Still in the act of acquiring a Blues library…feel free to introduce me to any of the old artists I may not have come across.  Was introduced to Beth Hart last night…and utterly amazed.  Also, send me the links to your Blues posts if you would?  I’d really like to see them.

Thank you, Sky~  Your replies are so poetic... they just make me want to pick the pen back up immediately.

I'm glad you liked this one.
