Giving up the Ghosts (for JP)

“I have watched Time give up the Ghosts,
No more than a river of dreams.
Now they merely wait—watch for us,”
We’ll join them soon, or so it seems.
Of all this, what bothers me most?
Memories yet wither and die.
We strive to carry them with us,
But detail escapes the mind’s eye.

A song in the night, sweet and soft,
I no longer can *hear that voice.
A moment’s comfort, doomed to fade,
We continue on without choice
But no longer hold dream aloft
Eyes cast low, simply fall in line.
For all the promise once displayed,
Dying Dignity gets no shrine.

Time steals our dearest and our best,
Leaves us to carry on alone.
The ashes fly off in the breeze.
The silence strikes a dreadful tone.
Truth be told, ‘should count ourselves blessed
We ever shared this space at all.
Left with emptiness and unease,
Why’s the good so hard to recall?

Waves washed upon a distant shore,
‘Wonder are we forgotten there?
Are holes in memory restored?
Are we blissfully unaware?
Seen by you, would you shake my hand?
Could love there eclipse all we’ve known?
Answers not ours to understand,
Don’t grieve for me the day I’m shown.

Michael...Really loved this wonderful poem. The best part for me is the following. I think it sums everything in life up.

Time steals our dearest and our best,
Leaves us to carry on alone.
The ashes fly off in the breeze.
The silence strikes a dreadful tone.
Truth be told, ‘should count ourselves blessed
We ever shared this space at all.
Left with emptiness and unease,
Why’s the good so hard to recall?

Thank you, Sky~.  I do hope I get a chance to ask him about it.  Don’t know how it is I let words of such depth slip by without a little prompting of all that was behind it.

Glad you enjoyed.
