The Tender

From the lectern of prophesy
There comes a jaded view.
A candle in a darkened room—
A shadow run askew.
Bent over from light cast on me,
I’ll walk my crooked mile.
But ‘won’t bleed over foreseen doom,
While I’ve still time to smile.

The jagged cuts laid one-by-one,
I offer up my skin.
A treasured art to rip apart,
To free what lies within.
The song near done, who here has won?
Where even shadows fade,
And Time, like a slow-poisoned dart,
Soon leaves us all unmade.

Yes cry, “oh why?”  Anguish, despair!
How are you to get through it?
To stand bereft, but of time left
To live, see how you do it?
The chance is there to make it fair…
To make it count for something.
Or moan, curse, cry and say goodbye—
Leave your loved ones with nothing.

Yes, wallow away all the day,
Squander away each minute.
Curse the time lost, add up the cost,
On life, though you’re still in it.
Bemoan all chance, forsake the dance,
Yes, you!  Who sees its ending.
I question choice of stricken voice,
Weren’t years yours for the tending?

Michael...I just have to say you sir are the best I've ever read. None of the masters have anything on you my friend. Publish a book if you need a backer contact me. I know you could sell more than you realize. Talk to Oprah she will make you a celebrity.
Anyway really enjoyed this your writing always amazes me, could you send your muse over to my house for a short while? Take care my friend...Paul

Our years are definitely our responsibility. You're having a very powerful walk! This feels like you're not holding back. It points and cuts very effectively.

Please get with Paul, and let me know when the book comes out. I'll politely request the price of a signed copy.

Ahh how we curse the slipping sands of time, such a previous resource that we fritter away.

Paul, I have never been good at taking compliments but I will try, for that is one hell of a compliment.  I thank you, my friend, I am honored that my words touch you the way they do.  On the publishing end, that was a dream I set down a long time ago, mostly due to not wanting to alter my poetry to meet rules or content agendas.  Truly, I never gave a thought to self-publishing.  I will look into it and see what options are out there, then be in touch with you.  As for the muses, and they seem to be many of late, I could probably do without the one who keeps waking me up at 3:00 a.m.  Always proves well worth the waking though.  Expect her soon.

“Our years are definitely our responsibility.”

There is not a truer statement than that, Jenn.  We are all just the product of the decisions we make.  I use words as an emotional release I wouldn’t have otherwise.  I do have to be careful which ones I post even after all these years, cause some words do tend to have sharp edges…then some need to be seen either way.  About the book, you already know about my pricing system…” a piece of your soul” is all I ask.

Marshalzu,  Fritter away, indeed...even when the end is in sight.  We humans are a curious lot.

I read somewhere..'Time is a river without
banks' This is excellent work, sage thoughts
made even more difficult to put into Rhyme, which is never forced btw.

& I agree with those before me
