Brought up in poverty,
Raised to procced forward,
While the rest just holding back,
Waiting for a handout,
Went to a new country,
Used the system to pull myself up,
Along the way, fell quite a lot,
Formal teaching kept me focused,
With proper aid, finally graduated,
My first 9 to 5 was a dream come true,
Not realizing that it was prison with four walls,
Not behind bars, just mentally decapitated,
Staring at one screen,
Somehow evolved to two,
Plugged into the system,
Not realizing I became a cog,
Leaving behind social interaction,
All so that I can have fraction of happiness,
Moving forward a couple of years,
Got myself graduated with an MBA,
From two to now three screens became my life,
Professional over personal became the theme,
Grinding past the 5 and through the weekend,
Hoping all these efforts results in more cheese,
Only to give some of it to Uncle Sam,
The rest spread between debt and retirement,
Pennies to my name for decades of education,
No class could ever prepared me to work like a drone,
Not using my true skills, just getting by,
Hoping for another TGIF,
Decades will pass, and I will reflect back on where I have traveled,
No further than one high-rise to the next,
Titles upgrade and downgraded, and within it some change in pay,
In the end I will ask,
Was it all worth it?

I speak insanity. I write fantasy. I sleep reality.

"My first 9 to 5 was a dream come true,
Not realizing that it was prison with four walls,"

I was well past 40 before I ever realized the job is only part of life, and to stop giving every ounce of myself to work and none of myself actual living.  It's only the in-between shifts that matter.

We wait a lot of our lives to work and make money. Sometimes we toil away too many years before we're actually living.  It's all worth it if a balance can be found.

Enjoyed.
