Seventeen, Again

Rummaging -
cleaning off closet shelves,
obviously finding things not seen
in years - I found a picture,
one locked in an old, silver bracelet,
you know,
those with a chain-link band,
and a thin, rectangular box,
with a flip-up top,
that you put a picture in -
they were pictures back then,
not photographs.
Rummaging, I opened it:
and was instantly seventeen, again.
Seventeen, in June, Sixty-plus years ago,
standing just outside the door
of a Greyhound Scenicruiser bound for San Diego,
the Navy Recruit Training Center,
a whole new chapter of life:
Seventeen, when you put it on my wrist
saying you'd always be there.
Rummaging, old as I am now.
Remembering -
I never saw you again.

Jwesley - Fleeting are those moments and people which get lost irretrievably in time. Maybe a lot of that is what makes us scribblers of the written word, so others can remember their lost times too. Poets! You gotta love 'em! I much enjoyed this and thanks for the memories JW. You did good. Namyh

I love the way you share these moments with us. Found things on dusty cluttered shelves can definitely help us travel.  I've lost myself in doing this.

James...Sweet touching write. Enjoyed very much. Instantly brought me back to 1964 when I was seventeen. Lots of first experienced by me that year...Paul

Memories and keep sakes are treasures beyond comparison with the power to transport you back half a lifetime ago. Wonderfully written.

Damn...that last line hurt.  I think maybe we temper expectation and train ourselves to, maybe unconsciously, plan for possible disappointment in later relationships in life.  the first ones though...there's no holding back. you believe with all of your heart, mind and soul...probably the reason crushes are called crushes.  Felt this one James, wonderfully written.
