Fair to middlin' of nowhere

To tell you the truth,
he wasn’t exactly
what I had in mind
for my next dog.
I had intended on
something smaller,
sworn not to shed.
But, there was something
about his picture
that  wore and tore
at my heart.
He looked like a Gus to me,
even before I’d made up
my mind to adopt him.
I found out later
that the Shelter
had named him Haggis.
I thought to myself,
what an ugly name
for such a cute little dog.
Granted, his good looks
are not classy,
he leans more to the scruffy.
A pint sized Tramp if you will.
When we finally met,
he warmed up to me right away.
By the time we were doing
the official paperwork,
he was licking and lovin’
all over me.
He is by far the most
affectionate dog I’ve ever met.
Needless to say,
he has my heart
wrapped around his little paw.
When I get home,
he is so excited to see me
that I practically have to
beat him off with a stick.
He is either in my lap
or at my feet,
and he follows me wherever I go.
There is something about
that kind of love and devotion,
that fills a void deep inside.
The way he responds
to my affections tells me
he loves my lovin’s too.
Oh, I know,
he is just a silly mutt
with no pedigree.
Still, there is something about my Gus
that’s healing a world
inside of me.

Ah, this warms my heart.  My puppy, who is now actually 3 but will always be my puppy my puppy, was the runt of her no pedigree liter.  The loyalty and unconditional love of these creatures is an amazing thing.  Glad to see that particular spot on your heart healing, Lori.

As you well know, scruffy is classier than classy can ever be – and the greatest pedigree is not on paper, but in a little (or middle-sized or large) doggy heart!

Huggles and pattles and kissles to Gus-sweetie-pie and happy doggy-bond to you, Lori!
