I Look at You I look at you—there is no peace Of mind, I simply crave release. The soft cushions ‘pon which you lay Grim rewards of a harsher day. The wars we fought—songs we sung loud. The echoes pale beyond this shroud Of dignity I firmly place Before eyes welling in disgrace. So easy to count the gifts lost I could not hold at any cost. For what is courage with no fight? But long ago forfeited right. For what is strength with naught to hold? But warmth to one immune to cold. And what is a bountiful heart To a world that rips such apart? I look at you—the struggles laid With you to ground, the price been paid— And wonder, if regret dies too, If mine should not have gone with you? If I am free to walk away, Who has it easier this day?
