Statuary

If life played fair, what would despair
Then have to offer me?
Untallied woe amidst the glow
Of sweet Serenity?
So pure—so true, these things we knew,
But gifts of circumstance.
So strong—so bold, we damned the cold
Of this world’s demon dance.

But of these things, who pulls the strings
That turn haves to have nots?
To yield a day been ripped away
From a dream as it rots.
Fillet of soul, you die unwhole,
Or wither in its wake.
Shine unfulfilled on eyes distilled
Of hope, tied to a stake.

Where in the black of “can’t go back”
‘Just watch Time as it flies.
Heart steeped in ache, await bough’s break
Beneath the tree of sighs.
The wretched course of due remorse
But a twitch on the lips.
A shake of head, lost to the dead
Touch of my fingertips.

Pilfered spirit, I still hear it,
If but a faded mumble.
Too broken now to even bow—
Too defiant to crumble.
In voiceless chance, this spectered dance
Of solitude forsaken
Slips to a brusque shadowing dusk,
With no step ever taken.

Callous, yet worn; ever been torn
‘The nightmare never ending.
Pitch black in scale, night’s to assail—
Price of a life pretending.
Stalwart, aplomb—demeanor calm,
Pay I witness, unshaken;
In dream of death, holding my breath
‘This time I don’t awaken.

Michael...So much I could say about this masterpiece. The inner line rhymes the double stanza style you write in, The soft emotion of the whole poem just makes me feel like I'm living your dreams and pain.
Truly a great poem. Will add it to my library proudly. Thanks for sharing...Paul
