Song of Cain

First day ‘destroyed my brother.
Then looked to a new day.
Cursed by father and mother,
They soon cast me away.

The road was dark and twisted,
No one to share my song.
Oh, I could have resisted,
But here’s where I belong.

The thoughts that once made me smile
Have all been laid to rest.
For life’s just an endless mile
Once you have failed its test.

And though I have fulfilled need.
That don’t get you too far.
The woman, she takes your seed,
But you know how women are.

Oh yes, I tried to please her—
Threw my soul to that abyss.
But now only ashes stir
Where we shared our first kiss.

The children, ripe for sinning,
But victims of their birth.
The curse I’m just beginning
To give back to this earth.
