Etchings

Cauterization of the soul,
It gets away from me.
The ashes swirling in the wind
Of long lost dignity,
Not sure when/where I lost control,
My thoughts drift through the haze.
Can always break what you can’t bend,
My mantra of lost days.

So ‘pace this walk with solemn tread,
And never lift my eyes.
In bitter truth, holding my own
On graceless alibis.
A living tribute to the dead,
With chisel raised in hand,
What words have I offered to stone
That haven’t marked me damned?

Where wretched, weary, weak and worn
I face another day.
Where body aches; where soul’s been starved,
Where mind invites decay.
Bloodshot eyes beholding hopes shorn,
The images won’t fade.
Where fingers touch etchings hand carved—
Our frail gifts displayed.

Beloved?  Christ, who is to say?
Why bedeck the deceased?
Assuage our guilt as we look down
On one whose dreams are fleeced?
The price all dead it seems must pay,
Garnishing from the grieving—
These unvoiced blessings of renown
Never spoken while breathing.

A penny for your paltry thoughts,
Not half witty nor clever.
To think, only once one has died,
Will such praise live forever.
‘Least till no one minds mindless plots
And back to earth they’re taken.
Words, as body, unrectified;
Remembrance forsaken.

Your pin pricks of verse hits the chords that penetrate into the core of who you are as a poet showing emotions.
