Waking Dream

Lost along the nightly precipice
of my waking dream
far beyond the song I have chased
from the trembling throat of the highway
I am feeling out the dark elephant skin
of hoped-for America
and wished-for truth
and the presence of long fought-for freedom
so many voices from so many places
have called for with uncommon fervor
following that shining, arching stream
I feel it is near
no matter where my restless head turns
looking across this massive land
getting smaller by each day
the distances between friendly hands and hearts
widen by the hour
seemingly insurmountable
but are those not our footsteps on the moon?
Are these not the names of our brethren
upon the many white crosses and stars
that dot Normandy green?
Let us be Icarus or let us be Superman
I want to feel the fire again

Lost along the nightly precipice
of my waking dream
I am trying to see that this painting
is never really done
new colors are added every day.
