A Word On the Wind

White lines on the highway
one by one they fall away
got that itch to ramble once again
I'm chasing a word I heard on the wind

White lines on the mirror
little by little you disappear
got to scratch and tear to feel again
left chasing a word you heard on the wind

In the clear eyes of a hopeless romancer
you can see the road and the endless sky
inside each one of us is a dancer
these are the steps we must take until we die
and for every word on the wind I follow on down
there's a jumble of words in me that never make a sound
and in my rear view I cast a glance back at where I've been
and all that I'll never be again

White lines on the skyway
across the blue ocean of day
and I think on the miles I've come
my path lit by the moon and sun
every doubt, every thought out plan
to reach the promised land
and for every rule I had to bend
there's another soul that's gone chasing a word he's heard
on the wind

On the brazen wings of youth melting in the sun
you can see far down this winding path
in times of trouble on the run
you’ll find craziness in you that’ll make you laugh
and for every word on the wind you follow on down
there’s a reason for you to finally leave this ol’ town
but as you go you’ll look wistfully over your shoulder
and you’ll find out there a world much colder

So there’s an itch in us longing for a scratch
and there’s growth in the realization you’ll never come back
500
600
700 little white lines on the highway
one by one they fall away
today another clear-eyed rambler will begin
to chase these words he has heard on the wind

Souls, I liked the premise of this,
very good writing, what a journey life
can give us at times.

Enjoyed..

Soul drifter,
I enjoyed this poem on so many levels. Just the gentle way your rhymes fell together was pleasing as the words themselves. There was an inspirational quality to this piece that left me feeling a sense of satisfaction I wasn't expecting.  ~L
