I traveled down a many lonesome highway-
I started as a kid of seventeen.
My eyes were firmly fixed on some horizon-
Where I was sure the grass was always green.

I loved the starry skies of Arizona,
The lovely sunsets seen from Waikiki-
The only thing I lacked was a companion-
To share the road and memories with me.

Somehow I saw myself as a romantic-
A man with itchy feet and lofty dreams:
A drifter with no fence to stop his passage-
A whole lot like the rolling tumbleweeds.

Time has flown, and now I sit and ponder-
Considering a lot of wasted years.
I can’t recall just why I had to wander-
My visions fade behind a veil of tears.

I cry for all the roads I have not taken-
I cry for all the friends I never made.
I cry for all the ladies I’ve forsaken-
And wonder where I’d be if I had stayed.

John,
Your words are so heavy with regret it hurts my heart. You can "what if" yourself until you are black and blue for going down the path less taken. Don't look back on it now as if it was a wrong turn. Each souls searches for its words in a different way. You have given voice to your soul through your poetry. You are a blessing to your readers because your journey blessed you. ~L

There were reasons you didn't stay John.  If you didn't "feel" the comfort of home, how could you make it your home?  If you didn't share the depth of love or dedication, how unfair would it have been to stay as if you did?  I think maybe hurt and even more regret may have resulted. In the end, you might have been writing an "If I had left" poem...but the unsatisfied yearn would still be there.

Related to this one very well.

Gunslinger - When you dwell on the past, you're likely to rob the present but I've also found that when you ignore the past, good chance you may just rob the future. And there you are at a crossroads where you gotta choose a direction and regretfully bring your regrets with ya. Life!....you gotta love it! Enjoyed your well crafted work G. Namyh
