I am sorry, Lord
that my fellow humans
abused you, violently attacked you,
spurned your love,
rejected your gifts,
rent your heart in pieces,
humiliated you,
hung you on a cross.
I know you forgive them
for they “[knew] not what they [were doing].”
The nails through your hands
must have been excruciating,
especially dragged down
by your body weight,
not to mention being surrounded
by crowds, some mocking, some gawking
though some sharing the anguish at your agony.
The ouch I exclaimed yesterday
when I accidentally had one layer of skin
of a finger pierced by a thorn
doesn’t come within 93 million miles
of what you endured for hours
until God’s loving mercy
lifted you out of it.
I cannot imagine what you endured
though I try with all my heart to do so,
and none of my tears
could have lessened your agony.
You knew it was coming.
You knew what it was,
yet you did not even try to escape.
You walked towards it
and let it happen.
You did this for us
and at the bidding of our Heavenly Father.
I am in eternal awe.
Tell me all the ways we can thank you.
