Scarlet Feathers

He must be an older chap
Scarlett feathers are not
of youth - but of time
I catch his glance from
the Shepherd's crook.
Something is askew -
he rests on one leg, claw
gripping iron.
He flits, lands on the
unpainted picket fence
still one leg showing - then whoosh
to the crook again -
and now the injured claw
revealed.
He made it through winter -
I'll pray he overcomes his
rivals of Spring.

I never took myself for a bird watcher but last week what looked to be a sparrow took to building part of a nest on my roofing tiles. I watch for a bit, had a vast appreciation for his diligent efforts.

Could really appreciate the vivid image of this feathered friend of yours, and how well that image seems to reflect our own upon aging.

Thanks, Michael. He continues to return to the bird feeder just outside the kitchen window; beware the empty feeders...they come right up to the window and peer in, reminding me it is my privilege to feed them!

Poor fellow's claw in indeed nothing that will ever see health again; it is turned upward and withered. As you well know, the males will get to arguing once "spring" has safely sprung, in order that their soon to be mates are impressed.

I have become a bird watcher and listener here in the hills.  I see you watch with a loving heart as I would expect.  In my youth I would have wanted to fix what was wrong, but now I know that pain is a part of life.  Hugs!

Poor sweetie!  I hope he makes it too, and that he is a happy bird, in spite of it all.

Thanks for the invite to your backyard, it was lovely. I could almost taste a glass of iced tea, as we watched Sir Red flit about his business and muse on what happened to him.
Did he have a close call with a cat? What an enjoyable visit. ~L

I love to sit on the back porch and watch the birds. So many different kinds. My daughter's neighbour lost her koi fish to a crane. Lot's of wildlife around here.
