Around nine months after my wife died, I heard her say from the living room . . . “Darling.”

She Said, "Darling"
When she came to me
           I had been waiting
Wondering if she would and how long would it take
Sitting here in front of the computer
The Nipperdawg sprawled out beside me
When she said, from the living room
          "Darling"
It took only two days for her to come
The Nipperdawg heard it too
His head went up
Pointed toward the living room
And your favorite chair
          My heart fluttered erratically
I rose and trod toward where I thought the sound came from
Where we heard the sound
Because The Nipperdawg was right behind me
She weren't there, of course
          How could she be?
The recliner, her chair, was not rocking
Like it would have been in a movie
Nothing looked amiss
Nothing was amiss
Except the goosebumps covering my body
I stepped outside
          Without The Nipperdawg
He remained firmly planted in front of the recliner
Head cocked
Listening to things I could not hear, perhaps?
Maybe seeing things I could not see?
I've been told animals can do that
          Back to the computer
Trying to still my irregular heartbeat
It took a while for that to happen
It took longer for The Nipperdawg to calm down
Hours actually
He acted strange for most of the rest of the day
Rather I suppose I will have to unlearn a few things
Like my take on people who say they see and hear
          Things . . . Spirits . . . Ghosts . . .
I don't know how to describe
My feelings about this
Except to say that it was real

You loved her...that was 'real' and it was very 'real' that she loved you too, Jerry...and always will.
There's nothing to examine, in my opinion, and nothing to wonder about...but there is much to 'savor'.

I wish you all the best!

Jerrypat, You're so right about the dog..
they have that extra sense about these kind of things, & I totally believe what you heard
dear Poet..there are so many things greater
than we can truly explain.
