during all the hospital trips
Dottie was subjected to
in the last few months of her life
it was lonely
no one to talk to
but The Nipperdawg was there
and so I talked
he listened
The Nipperdawg was a damn good listener
he made it bearable
he made me think I mattered
bearable
like I said
I know I comforted him too
he let me know I did
little mutt
special dog Dottie and I had
he loved us both
played no favorites
cept me
when he wanted to walk
even then
it wasn't playing favorites
he knew she couldn't take him
when we had to move
to here
The Nipperdawg
was so good
he settled in much quicker than I did
I'm still not settled
don’t know if I ever will be
still
with The Nipperdawg
I had someone to talk to
someone
yeah
he was a someone to me
a good dog
a good listener
he made the rough spots a lot smoother
cause he loved me
he felt safe
he was safe
and we could talk
well
I talked, he listened
I loved that frigging dog
now he is gone
I have no one to talk to

Heartfelt, heartwarming, and bittersweet, all rolled up. Still, there is peacefulness and reckoning in your fine, reflective poetry, Jerry.

You're a remarkable man who writes stunning poetry that all who read you respect.

You are not 'alone', pal!

Ha, bluesysoc.'s first sentence in reply said it all, my friend.  Loved the 'Nipper' reference. I worked many years as a 'telecom' repairman for RCA, and have many fond 'nipper' memories.  Your memories, so sadly, yet lovingly succinct were wonderfully expressed.

There is strength in our memories, Jerry, and as long as you have them (yes, even express them as you do) . . . you're never alone.

j.
