Winter is for Aloneness and Silence

In the distance,
I hear the blue sea crashing against this island,
waves are rough and contentious
and white caps fill up the horizon,
and appear to connect to the winter grayness above me…

When did winter come?
The spring, summer and fall slipped away almost unnoticed.
Not even a whisper and they were gone.

When did winter come?!

Winter is for aloneness, and silence,
a quieting.
A cold palace –
a place for hearing echoes of heavy shadowy silence,
a dank oneness…

My thoughts return to the sea.
The blue sea will need be a friend –
but winter has its way there too, and turns it a tumult,
even shouting is soaked up and dampened.

In the waves my thoughts crash against the sand and stones
where wave after wave of relentlessly pounding
drown each word in the depth of an anxious soul,
the only solace on this island of sand and shale.

When did winter come?

Can I ever know that spring, summer,
or fall again?
My eyes so blurred from the cold wind, so hard to focus on words.
I strain to recall, not much there, no more examining verses, or thought.
Seems, nothing…
No more.

Just silence, is all that is.
Winter.

Brrrr! I felt the chill in your words. It put me in mind of a tree dying in the winter. Well done ~

really dislike winter, cold, rainy, and yes, time to reflect and be alone...
Good to see you and read your work again, made me feel the snow, sleet and winter's cold chill

I don't live in 'snow country'  We (about 30 miles north of Houston, Tx.) get a little snow every several years - if we're lucky. I would like more.  So, I have little exposure to your kind of winters; but have lived in such winters for a year here or there over my life. They are not unknown to me.

There are many pluses to winter to me, more in a naturalist way, than fun and games.  And my camera goes everywhere I go (age and it's various idiosyncrasies taking a toll now, though), I love photography.

If I dislike a time of year in particular,
I guess it would be the mid-summer 100+ degrees of heat with 90+ percent humidity -
but even that can be fun with a camera, and lots of water available.

Rambling here, enjoyed the read -

walk easy my friend.

Brrrr!! I have had all the winters I  want, or ever need. Cheyenne, Wyoming for a spell or three, then moved to New York City. Jeez! Wasn't such a brillent move that I thought it would mean.

Thanks for taking time to read and comment.

Jwesley:  Spring, or Humble?  I have a cousin that lives in Spring, she loves it.  Too freaking hot and humid for me. I lived in Houston for many years.  Glad I put that behind me.

LeeJ  I envy you, girl...

Lori, you got it, dead trees everywhere and no pecans.

JerryPat2: New York City? NOOOO!
Cheyenne, Wyoming?  Oh yeah, now that's the place to be.
