Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Sleep is a seductress
of a most fickle nature.
Sleepy is the spell
she casts upon your eyes,
making them heavy.
Each blink lingers
a little longer,
struggling under the weight
of her seduction.
But come and go
as she pleases,
not at your convenience.
Where was she at midnight last,
when she was needed?
She’s never welcome
when driving.
Since when has that
ever stopped her?
So strong is her magic,
she has lured some
to their eternal rest.
Who can resist her
warm soft voice
whispering to our primal needs?
She is the sound of the mother,
heard by the infant at her breast.
Sleepy, like a lullaby,
lulls the body away from awareness.
It cradles it in the sweet sublime
of oblivion.

I read this twice, Miss Lori.
First, just to familiarize myself with it, like all readings.

The second time, however, was hypnotic.
Loved this line:
quote:
"So strong is her magic,
she has lured some
to their eternal rest.
Who can resist her
warm soft voice
whispering to our primal needs?"
I knew I liked you...

I SO relate to this, Lori, except that I have never needed to call her.  I sleep at the drop of my head on the pillow.  Sometimes I want to ponder some issues when I get into bed, but I seldom get to start, let alone get anywhere, as Sleep overcomes me.  However, it is a lovely poem.

You nailed it, my friend. Unfortunately I'm a poor sleeper in that, I have always had trouble sleeping.  Best example of that is when I was in Navy boot Camp, back in 1961 - Sunday was a blessed day for all recruits - Everyone went to church because they knew they'd get a good hours worth of sleep.

Not me.  I was the preacher's congregation. Because I've never been able to fall asleep sitting up. The preacher loved me!  My head never slumped!

Anyway - great read, and on the spot!
