Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2018-11-02 05:24 PM

The fire in my soul
has burned down to ashes.
What embers may remain
are buried deep beneath the gray.
Not beyond rekindling,
with the right kind of tender.
A little dried grass
with political roots
are sure to ignite
with  a flicker of anger
and a flame of frustration.
My heart is again warmed
with passion.
But it is only the pull
of Patriotism.
Like a grass fire on the Prairie,
it can spread fast and far.
It consumes in an instant, then out.
Ah, but the dried leaves of autumn
can coax a flicker of passion
from patient embers.
Dead branches feeding the flame
into long tongues licking
the hardwood logs of love
into a blaze.
The red maple reminds me
of those days of passion,
as I stare at the ashes
with a handful of grass.

LeeJ,
Yes it is sad, but I like to think there is some hope in that there is enough embers left to rekindle. We have an old wood burner we use in the winter in the garage and there is something to be said about the sense of satisfaction you get bringing a fire back from a few embers. There is a knack and it takes patience. Success strikes a primal chord. ~L

L, I really liked the premise here, this is well thought out, & leaves the reader with that tiny flicker of hope. Also..there is something special and satisfying about bringing a fire back to its full-burn.

Enjoyed..

Thanks Sky!
I'm so happy that you were able to appreciate this poem to its fullest. I'm really enjoying you here at PIP-or as I like to think of it-the big blue buffet. ~L

Do not understand how I missed this one, my friend.

"with passion.
But it is only the pull
of Patriotism."

Yep, Patriotism . . . We both have that pull, its a shame we are pulling together in different directions. Heh.Heh

I read the first several lines thinking of love, relationships and lost chances - and was nodding with every word, empathy and sympathy seeping from my pores. But then I realized I was on the wrong track - art imitating life. LOL The error was all mine and my mindset, though - and once I switched mental gears, I fully appreciated the poem as written. And it's one to appreciate, one to remember, one that reminds that hope and passion can flare again in politics or personal life. Well done!
