The End Of A Line

My father’s family
have all gone
wherever the deceased
go.
My mother’s too,
for that matter.

And my wife . . .
well, she passed
far to early,
several years ago,
taking with her
all the children
we would have loved,
but couldn’t have.

Now it’s just me,
far older
than I ever thought
I could ever be,
proved
by looking in the mirror,
seeing the distortion
the glass now projects.

I’ve died a thousand deaths,
one for every day
she’s been gone
and not once have I
contemplated ending it
on a sour note –
suicide has never been
a choice, could never
be a choice.

Today though,
I realize
Mother Nature,
for whatever reason,
has determined,
I am the end of a line.

My family has been retired.
My name ends with me.
We probably
won’t even be a footnote
in history.
No flame of glory,
nothing extraordinary,
just another of Nature’s

experiments
that’s come to an end.

No, when I go,
it’ll be kicking and screaming
to the end.
I won’t make it easy,
I won’t do her job for her . . .

To get rid of me,
and mine,
and all we’ve ever loved,
Mother Nature’s going
to have to commit . . .

Genocide!

"it’ll be kicking and screaming"

I still have those thoughts, my dark friend.

Jimmy,
I admire your zest for life. Me, I'm more along the lines of, "I'm glad that's over".
