Fair to middlin' of nowhere

Soft sounds surround me
as I slip out from under the covers,
bare feet tiptoe across the carpet
to the bedroom door.
A floorboard creaks at the threshold
as I pull the door to,
just before it latches.
Dog tags tink together as he raises his head
to greet me good morning
when I walk past him to the kitchen.
Running water at the sink
then the gurgling of the pot.
The refrigerator door opens
to get a splash of milk then closes.
A packet of sweetner rips open,
flicked into the cup.
The tap of toenails on the kitchen floor
impatient for the scooping of the food
falling into the empty bowl.
Eager munching is syncopated by
dog tags bouncing against the side of the dish.
It lasts less than a minute
and he is scratching at the door.
It unlatches then yawns open
on well oiled hinges to let him out.
The cat comes in,
running to her empty bowl.
The refrigerator opens again
to get kitty a little taste of milk.
Then comes the sound of contented crunching.
The gentle thud of paws landing on the floor
means she’s had her fill of food
and is ready for some serious back scratching.
Her purring fills the silent room
until it is rudely interrupted by a scratch at the door.
The chair creaks.
The door unlatches and yawns once again
to let the eager dog in.
Soon he is chomping his anticipated mini Milkbone.
Betwixt and between the coffee and the pets
is the slow contemplative tapping of fingers
on a keyboard in my lap.

Hey thanks everybody!
I'm happy you enjoyed spending a little time with me at my ungodly early hour of the morning that I have been getting up at. About the time the old man wakes up, I'm ready to go back to bed. ~L
