Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2018-05-09 08:11 AM

For the first time I can remember
I hit a bird head on
on my windshield.
Out of nowhere I saw
the underside of its wings
and then I heard the bang
as it hit me.
I was so surprised.
They usually flit out of the way,
following the wind currents
around the car.
I had to use my wiper washers
to wash away the evidence
of the fatal mishap.
I was unusually calm
about the whole thing.
I was a little surprised
at my lack of remorse for the bird.
But I was distracted
by thoughts of home
and the more than usual
admonitions from my husband
to be careful on the way to work.
I was wondering if my run in
had been bothering his subconscious.
I feel bad for the bird,
but fortunate for myself
that it wasn’t a deer.
