you said the sparows were joyful usually
when you watched them on jesus only mornings
how they seemed to know your eyes loved them
and they didn't mind entertaining for free

you wished the other jesus didn't scare them
when he came along on those summer fridays
with his big mower to do the lawnscapes
and pick up the flowers your neighbors left

I heard the chuckle you gave that humming bird
when he chased the others away from your roses
and how you did the little aww thing afterwards
when he hovered to harvest one of your smiles

you don't mind my cigars any more you said
the smoke makes lovely shapes in the pines
and makes you imagine me holding your hand
when the damp ground around you is so cold

beneath your stone, and the empty shades of grey

Exquisite as always, DS.  Those last 2 lines shook the quivers out of my soul.

. . . and "dust sprinkling" with the best of them . . . The last line grabbed me in a grayish sort of way.

Sometimes your words bring smiles, sometimes they bring tears. These did both.
