Smile Me Another Memory

God. . .
Smile me another memory –
I’ve all but worn
my others out.
They’re no longer memories,
but life as I know it.
There’s nowhere else to go,
no future.
There’s nothing
but my past.
and the fear
of seeing it,
again, and again,
each day.

God . . .
Smile me another memory –
just like the one
you stole . . .

from me.

There ya go, J . . . proving the point that we old people think of the past as though we can change it. Not so! At least I don't have any illusions that I can change the past. Get real! We look to the past in embarrassment many times at the mistakes we did make, and that is a hard look back. We also look back to the past because looking ahead frightens us.

I would love to say something wise and insightful - but all I can do is add a heartfelt "AMEN!"

Wow!  A sober write.  This tugs and then rips life’s reality strings.  Well done!
