Where Have All The Poets Gone
By Paul Wilson

Where have all the poets gone
have their quills run dry
Do they stare at blank pages
looking for words and ask why

Maybe tomorrow the sun will shine
as they embrace the Autumn of their years
Clouds bring a cool Summer rain
hiding their frustration and tears

Not so long ago inspiration was a given
everyday brought another reason to write
The years have silenced their muse
they search and search but he’s nowhere in sight

Where have all the poets gone
have they packed a bag and left town
On these pages of blue
not very many old friends can be found

Some have passed on to eternity
their hearts stilllonging to write
They have left us with emptiness
as they embrace God’s light

Winter snows melt giving way to Spring flowers
gone are the yesterday’s of our lives
Tomorrows are yet to be explored
we visit and read old friends in thearchives

He's still around and kicking, Paul, and that old Muse will jump-start sooner than later.

Hiya, Paul!

Speakin' of...It's been a long time since you posted. So...the idea is to post more and reply even more! This technology may be Jurrasic to some, but the principles remain the same.

One poet[ess] thinks it's mine and Lori Rhoden's site. Gee, all we do is post and reply to everyone who comes here (which isn't many) which is the foundation of this "Family of Friends", as Ron calls it. So I guess she and I are to blame for people leaving or not coming back. Many come and 'look around', but don't post or reply. If they do post, they still don't reply. That's why I posted this:

/pip/Forum6/HTML/002191.html

It would be great if you'd stay awhile, Paul.

Jerry... Thanks I hope you are right about that old muse, Thanks for the read

Bluesy... I tried the way you said I do read quite a lot but just don't reply very often
I just seem burned out. This is my first poem in over 5 years and might be my last I never know. The motivation just isn't there

Thanks for reading and commenting. I do know the more you reply the more replies you get but i'm not looking for replies or praises I just want to share my poetry with whoever wants to read it... Paul

Well then, I reckon your last line answers the question of "where have all the poets gone".

Be well, Paul, and visit when the spirit moves you.

An argument, Paul? With you? Certainly not! I don't know where you got that idea.

I don't wish to argue with you, Paul and I don't play, "petty games". As a "Deputy Moderator", I would have expected a more reasonable response if you are taking umbrage with me personally or anything I wrote. I always post within the site's rules & guidelines and always reply to everyone who posts here.

I signed on Pip soon after you did in 2002, Paul. I had to leave for awhile and then came back some years later.

When you were looking for 'Earth Angel' in "Q & A", I tried to help you here: /pip/Forum13/HTML/001519.html.

It strikes me odd that otherwise intelligent people who hover here put so much credence in preconceived notions. If you ask me not to reply to your posts Paul, I'll, of course, honor your request.

I'm sorry you've chosen to feel toward me as you do. I'll not respond in-kind.

Be well, Paul.

Some of us just linger in the shadows Paul.     Peeling open the archives though, that's like a timewarp to a bygone era.  When I do that, I lose days in the real world.  Could stay there infinitely.

I feel your words.

Paul - This is Namyh, lingering here in the shadows and from this vantaged view, I believe you have stated a poignant question. Where indeed have the poet's gone? It seems that the imagination has separated from the painters who paint, the sculptors who chisel and we poets who write. My question is has the ink in our imagination evaporated, been deflected elsewhere or just gone dry? Thanks for this resurrection of thought  for some and an emergence from the shadows for others. Now I feel like writing something. Thanks Dr. Paul for your dosage. I'll be back in 2 weeks for booster shots. LOL. Namyh

Marchmadness...It looks like some of the old poets are starting to come back and that is good. I'd like to think that we gather inspiration from each other and like Ron's motto " We are a family of friends"

I never noticed till now you are from California. What a great place to be for inspiration...Paul

So good to read you today, Paul.
Just when you think we are gone...
we spark back.

Calliope has been silent for so long, with Athena taking her place of late, so it is all good, and am still being creative.

But some voices have been hushed; thank the Wiz for our Archives.

Hugs!

Hi Paul, a great poem and all good questions, I have been posting on PIP since 2001 and loved to write something almost everyday mainly between 2001 and 2007, since I have posted a few but not many. I think the muse is very active when we need it to be, emotions and inner questions come out and become ones release, then new directions in life are taken and thoughts and needs change, or they did for me. When posting and sharing we find wonderful inner joy. I think it is not just our muse we need but someone to give us a topic to write on, that is what gives our muses something to ponder on. I used to be in a poetry club and there was a subject set each month, we all looked forward to writing and sharing. So maybe set a subject each month and see what happens. Sunshine and many other used to send smiles my way and made a real difference to inner satisfaction.
With hope many will return

Rick

Rick...You are so right. I believe my words come from a higher power and I am only the messenger, be it every day or once a year I try to never force any of my poetry, I just let it flow. Thanks for taking time to read and reply...Paul

There is a little lump in my throat and my heart skips a beat simply remembering those days when  the laughter the love and the tears ran deep and the poetry was so heart felt.  My memories are vivid and ever so bittersweet.   Beautiful poem Paul, thanks for the memories.

Ditto to Blues' beautiful message above, Paul.  You have painted the thoughts of so many into a very beautiful poem. I believe that even those who have left or return only intermittently or have left this mortal coil, have left a part of their heart here.  How could they not?

I remember when my world revolved around these blue pages. Friends - both those I knew only from their words and those I knew in the "real" world - waited here... and I couldn't wait to join them. I responded more than I posted because my muse hasn't ever been prolific. And I lurked more than I responded. Life interfered, but this was my touchstone... and I came back when I could, watched and read... and cared. My muse going on near-permanent vacations would not have kept me away, but the caring? The place of joy became a hall of memories painful to visit as too many of my pals left for poetic realms these eyes can't read.
I keep promising myself I'll be back on at least a semi-regular basis but I'm a coward and avoid pain when I can. So I've had to face the facts that 1) I have to maintain some emotional distance and 2) I don't know how to maintain emotional distance when I read poetry.
It's a work in progress.
I thoroughly enjoyed your poem... and the voices from the shadows.

suthern...I truly know how you feel, I to miss the poets that are no longer here and those that have more serious commitments in life, and those that have lost their muse.
Even if you don't post often it is still great too hear from you. Thanks for reading...Paul
