There are those creatures
that discard their outer layer.
As they grow into new tender skin
they are vulnerable.
I am such a creature.
In transition,
I seek shelter in my words
while my new facade firms.
My heart exposed,
it feeds on any kindnesses
that drift by it.
Soon enough I will toughen up
in my new skin with wrinkles
and spots and tufts of gray.
Safe in my own skin again
I will remember where
the kindnesses came from.

As long as we're breathing we can come to know more of our 'inner selves'...but some kindness coming from outside of ourselves gives us a warm, cuddly feeling that we just can't imitate alone.

I guess that's what boxes of gooey chocolates are for.
Good, insightful poetry, Miss Lori.

A stick in the eye is worth two in the...Nah! I'll start over.

What about just being smeared with chocolate-covered cherries? Ha-ha-ha!
