The cool of her cat house conceals me as I hide from the soft sultry summer air
A sweet relief sweeps over me as sweat condenses across my forehead.
My nostrils flare some with the odor of stale cigarette smoke and lingering lager

As I set myself into the same old scratched leather sofa we’d once made our own,
sleepy jazz riffs weave through the waxen smoke, sketching memories
in the soft shimmer of mineral lamps and rising globules of red-lighted lava

I can still feel her slender legs ebbing over my washed-out jeans whispering teases in my ear
Her warmth would engulf me, and my heart would wander so as she drew her rose-red lips to mine

Laying in the depths of leather, such as we were, together...was a place I so desperately needed
And the funny thing was, just moments before I could stake her, she said she could take it or leave it

So now, as I stand to leave, I turn for one last look at the now empty sofa
with the amused awkwardness of saying goodbye to an old friend in the street
….and realizing you’re going the same way

Bluesy,
I love your story telling. You don't tell so much about 'mean streets' as you do about the hard emotions and harsh realities. And fact may be stranger than fiction in your work, only you know for sure, but it makes for an excellent read and anticipation for the next instalment of the cabin. ~L

I love 'mean streets' poetry.

...and I love the way you read right into a poem (or even 'purple prose'), Miss Lori. Thank you so much, doll!
