the family was driving to Shreveport
to see Hank at the Hayride
it was nighttime when they came upon
the car in a ditch swollen with rain
water rushed over it
motor still warm

my daddy stopped
and out he hopped

lights from our '48 Mercury two-door coupe
shone on the scene
rain came down hard
daddy slid into the deep ditch, flashlight in hand
to the  upside down
car, front tires still spinning

mother shrieked shrill
fear was fulfilled

I left the Merc, although afraid
daddy was down there
somewhere I could not see him
needed to see him very much
he was my daddy

a sense of doom
car like a tomb

heard him say, damnit
down in that ditch
that scared me more
daddy did not cuss
never
so he was afraid . . . too

had someone died
mother still cried

shrieked again
don't go down there, Jerry
then,
Sam!  Sam!  Sam, get away from the car, it'll catch fire
he stayed
one of the few times he would disobey her

screech of a door
a grunt, then more
raining harder
more metal again metal, opening doors
mother singing shrill
right along
then daddy's flashlight
bobbed up the embankment of the ditch

no one down there
we said a prayer

on to Shreveport
saw Hank that night and Faron Young
couldn't get that car
and that ditch from my thoughts
what happened to the people
in the car in the ditch that rainy night

on the way back
couldn't see jack

"what happened to the people
in the car in the ditch that rainy night"

No seatbelts in those old cars (I owned two late forties models ), and if the wheels were still spinning, Jerry... the driver was probably thrown from the car and laying out there somewhere. The wheels would hardly spin for more than 30 seconds. My money says there was only one person, the driver.

Yeah, my dad thought pretty much the same as did you. He stopped at the first thing that was open and called the police. When we came back that night there was no one around. Dad stopped and looked around. He said he didn't see anyone. They may have found him/her, but we never heard a thing about it.

Yep, you're right, Lori. I have thought about that night so many times over the years. Thanks for stopping by this morning.

Wow, you really painted a picture in my mind with this one. It really left we wondering what happened at the end. Nice.
