Sliding To The Dive

Brubeck with Gerry Mullican
Blue Roots in '68.

I was 26, Crap had hit the fan.
I found myself in a bar,
divorced, broke, rocking back
and forth on a bar stool,
arms crossed,
hands on my shoulders,
chin digging into my wrist,
ice-cold glass of beer
before me, doing nothing,
just like the several
before it.

I was in pain man,
deep hurt,
to the core:
Brubeck was the only thing
that made any sense.
The only sense
I wanted to hear.

And even that
didn't stop the basic
rawness
that burned me
through and through.

Cause:  Hell If I Know!

She never said -
just took my kid,
barred the door,
kicked me out!

Or was I just not listening?

She might as well have
done it in my balls,
fixed me good -

At least I'd have had
a reason, for pain . . .

The barmaid put her elbows
on the bar,
chin in her hands
looked me hard in the eye,
pain in the wrinkles
around hers.
It took balls, she said,
to do it that way . . .

Yeah, I replied,
not that I ever
found any on her.

I straightened a little,
grabbed the beer,
chugged it,
looked at the empty,

Damn - Still,  Nothing!

this is so true, so "alive", the kind of experience that makes grow up (unfortunately), the poem is a jewel forever,
i had a few like this, but never married

Jimmy my friend,
You write this genre so well. You get gritty
in the human heart. ~L
