In a cursory circle stand the twenty
On ancient grounds of native land,
Coming for a plan of plenty
To memorialize the earth at hand.

Personal windings tied to stake
Trodding grass to bare;
Another opens questions
Feeling from some, the outer glare.

Wrapped is not the ground,
The flora, fawn, or grass
To be contained by mortal hands,
But to be shifted by the clouds.

In a fissure of the wantings
Mysteries will remain
Questions will be the answer,
Wonder, undefined, the gain.

a note:
I hope not this is not offensive to anyone. I strongly believe the wants and beliefs of Native Americans have been extremely neglected and grave selfishness has occurred by intruders in the formation of what has become our country.
This poem is a reflection of how I felt when recently in a mixed group of scholars who were discussing earthen enclosures made by ancient people. There were also people there representing Native American associations. It was evident portions of the two were at odds.

I was in awe of what it took
to build such a massive structure, more focused on the fact these people had a momentous purpose. I was drawn to ask questions that may have been seen unimportant
to others there who had a purpose.

I left the site appreciating the massive, unified effort in its creation, but felt my presence at the event may have been token. People put up with my desire to learn more, but some seemed uninviting and cold. All and all, it was worth feeling awkward when I asked another question. Putting puzzle pieces together made me awestruck of the work and dedication of the ancient culture to path of their visions.   ~miscellanea

"But to be shifted by the clouds."

The above is the coolest line.

There is nothing "offensive" or should not be, to Anyone, my friend.  The offensiveness, to me, is from (some) academics in their way of looking down their noses at someone like they (the someone), are a piece of sand in need of brushing away or, to be ignored.

I've been there (not an academic myself but closely related to two PhD's and so among their peers at times.) Felt the "scorn", for lack of a better word, from those who give "academics" a bad name..  But, in contrast, there are those who bend over to help, explain and answer. Them I cheer.

And it isn't the competition that makes the former act the way they do - well maybe among their competitors, but, come on, if you're snide, you're snide.

(no offense meant, my friend, just an observation of mine,  over "years",  voiced.

questions will be the answer, this is so well Written, and to my opinion this is sad, it means there will be no response to the history of these people (if i understand). The sacrifice goes on unfortunately. thanks for the emotional homage
